The monument to Nikolai Nikolaevich, Grand Duke
(The corner of the Manezh Square and the Karavannaay street, Moscow, 1914-1918)
The monument was opened on January 12, 1914.
The author - Italian sculptor P. Canonica.
Description of the monument
The bronze equestrian statue was placed on a high, decorated by bronze, granite pedestal with high relief groups on the four sides. At the high reliefs there were the pictures of riders including the Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich, Tsarevich Alexander Alexandrovich, the generals M. Skobelev, I. Gourko etc.
The episodes of the battles at Shipka and Plevna were on the monument. On the back side of it there was a group of soldiers with regimental flags. The bronze sculpture was weighing in at 8 000 kg.
In November 1918 the sculpture was dismantled and "taken to the Academy of Arts for remelting on the busts of the well-known figures of the revolution."
