The Monument of Glory
( Izmailovsky Prospect, in front of the Troitzko-Izmailovskoi Cathedral
, St. Petersburg, 1886)

The monument was opened in October 1886, in honor of the ninth anniversary of the capture of the fortifications of Gorniy Dubnayk. The monument was created on the initiative of the Military engineering department in front of the Troitzko-Izmailov Cathedral, which was the  monument to Russian military glory. At this regimental temple of one of the oldest regiments of the Russian Imperial Guard - Izmailovskiy (founded in 1731), preserved heirlooms of the Patriotic War of 1812, the Russian-Ottoman war of 1828 - 1831, 1853 - 1856, 1877 – 1878: the trophy banners, the keys of the fortress, the marble plaque with the names of the dead officers of this regiment, the regimental colors, etc.
On the opening day of the monument the salute of 101 firings of the artillery guns sounded from the bastions of the fortress. The participants of the gala Parade were Alexander III, heroes of the Russian-Ottoman war, the generals Radetsky, Shuvalov, Milutin, Vannovsky, Gurko.
The  Column of Glory  was created by the architect D. Grimm, with the participation of the military engineer G. Zhitkova and the  sculptor P. Schwartz.
The column height of column was 28.76 m and its weight – 560 000 kg. It was decorated with 140 trunks of trophy Turkish guns. The Corinfskaay capital and the statue were minted from copper sheets. Inside of the column was constructed a spiral staircase of 88 steps. At the top of the column - a genius with a laurel wreath at arm's length, as if crowned of the winners "(the figure of Victory). On all four sides of the monument were the bronze plaques with inscriptions indicating the main episodes of the war and the names of some of the troops who took part in it.
The monument was destroyed in 1929. The pretext was the assumption that the monument may adversely affect friendly relations between the USSR and Turkey. The cannon barrels, according to official figures, went to the State Fund, that is to scrap.  And unofficially - have been sold in Germany: in fact most of the guns at the time were bought by the Turks at the Krupp and the Krupp steel always valued highly.

Near Troitzko-Izmailovskoi Cathedral  the memorial monument was installed  to the lost "Military Glory». It was  in the form of built-in fence granite stele (architect G. Sheremet'ev, sculptors V. and S. Ivanov).
